In over three years of ownership I never checked how old my tires were

Looking at the date code these tires are 14 years old! No wonder they are so hard and have bulges on all the side walls. I just don’t want to drop $1500 on wheels and tires right now. Good thing I drive less than 1000 miles a year. This is apparently my concern for safety:

No, they are tires from the FUTURE! The year of 3402!

1500$ on tires? Well if you plan on getting pilot super sports yeah, that is roughly the price... I try used tires a lot, testing them to see if I like them before getting new ones personally. 200$ a set for tires to try and experience. They have life left and are certainly better than what you have.

Yipes!

I had the same tires on my Apollo all 8 years I owned it. Never did check the date code, so who knows.

Please please please ... replace them. The tires are the only contact your car has with the road. Well, unless you roll it. They are among the most important parts of the car. A high speed blowout can kill you. Luckily I survived this one (borrowed Blazer):

Do not risk your life on shit tires. My best friend is horrible at maintaining cars, so of course at Christmas that year I wrapped a tire half in Xmas paper, half in Chanukah paper, and put it under his tree. He did not notice that either.

Used tires can be had pretty cheap with plenty of life left. Seems like the average price is $50/tire, so $200-300 would go a long way to making your ride safer (and probably handle a bit better)

No no no, I want new wheels too. Tires are only like $500.

So maybe just get tires that would also fit your new wheels when you get them? No need to do both at the same time...

Last year I replaced a set of BFG AT’s on my truck that were made in 82. They still had 50% tread, but they were starting to crack in between the tread blocks.

Aha, you are still around :) StoneCold reminded me of our little 3-way bet for a crate of beer to whoever completed their project car first. 2 years ago and unless you’ve finished none of us are!

Half hoping you've finished, half hoping I still have time to catch up ;)

Finished is a relative term, there’s always little bits to do here or there. But until my engine or trans blows up, I’m done. It is totally drivable, looks good, and isn’t on life support. Has StoneCold worked on Horse Cents in the last year? You’ve got enough projects to keep yourself busy haha.

Glad to hear it :) looks like we owe you some beer. Anything you’d like from this side of the pond?

I think the issue currently is getting to Horse Cents to actually work on it! He’s looking for a new job and new accommodation as well.
